Nevada Facts

The state name was adopted in 1861 when the territory was established by Congress. The word “Nevada” is a Spanish word meaning “snowcapped.” Nevada entered into the Union as 36th state during the Civil War, October 31, 1864. Sympathy arose after the tremendous loss at the Battle of Gettysburg, allow the Constitutional Convention, convening in Carson City July 4, 1864, to add another state of supporting the President and the Union cause. Hence, the possible explanation of the state motto “All for Our Country.”

The region we now call Nevada, occupied until the early to mid 1800s almost solely by the Mexican Way ended with the Treaty of Guadaloupe-Hidalgo, which granted which granted the territory to the United States, whose impending “Gold Rush” in California soon attracted permanent settlements. The first settlement was Genoa, originally called Mormon Station, near Carson City in 1851. Genoa was part of the Utah territory and permanently settled by the Mormons.

Nevada is the seventh largest state; it is 485 miles long and 315 miles wide, occupying 110,540 square miles (70,745,600 acres), 85% of which is federally owned, including the secret Area 51. It is the largest gold-producing state and is second in the world behind South Africa. Nevada has more mountain ranges than any other state, with its highest point being the 13,145 foot Boundary Peak.
